Spotlight DD Given 08-08-2019 Spotlight

That being said, apologies for the inactivity here! I wonder how many people would be interested in reading my journals if I were to blog again? What would I blog about again? Anime? Figure collection? Video game journey? I miss having a large space to speak my mind.

My activities on DA a decade ago were important steps in my creative career that got lost along the way but I decided to be stronger and pick myself back up. Moreover, lately I realize that I keep pining for my past self; You could say she inspires the me who I am today. Please look forward to the new and improved Kirly 2.0! ♥

Sakura1 by Kimopoleis

Quick item review time! This is the Card Captor Sakura Clow Book phone case for iPhone 5S.

If you know me in real life, you know I'm a sucker for dainty stuff. I love CCS and accessorizing, so this was just perfect! It's been long since this item released but I came across it just last year and immediately wanted to order one. :P

Sakura2 by Kimopoleis

Details and Accessories

It includes a keychain of Sakura's clow wand and strap lock with a magnet in gold.
Inside the flap are pockets where you can slide in bills or notes if you wish.

The Price

They're in various online shops for $20-$30.
I got mine for 1,000php ($20) from a local supplier.

Experience

It's nearly six months since I've been using this case and I must say the appearance had changed drastically. The gold design had been rubbed off and washed with a brownish tone and the red edges had been peeled off.

I'm careful with my things and I rarely put my phone in places where it can be scratched so this must be natural weather and day-to-day effects on the delicate (and possibly cheap) materials used. The only things still intact are the gold accessories, but even those have minor gashes on them.

Overall, I enjoyed owning this magical item. I wish its best quality lasted longer with me though. If you are a big fan of CCS, you'd surely love this, but if not, then I wouldn't really recommend it.

Thanks for viewing! Drop a comment if you have the time! :meow:

Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

The game is a crossover visual novel/adventure puzzle video game joint-developed by Level-5 and Capcom and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS.

Set in modern times in London, the story opens up as mysterious shady creatures chase Espella Cantabella, an escapee. Professor Layton's heroes, Hershel Layton and Luke Triton, were whisked away in an adventure after a fateful meeting with Espella. Baffled by the events that unfolded before their eyes, the pair was taken to the medieval world of magic through, apparently what it seemed, a magic book! Meanwhile,Phoenix Wright's main protagonists, Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey travel to London for work and got themselves in that very same situation.

The Breakdown

GAMEPLAY: 9/10

The game combines the core gameplay of the two series–puzzle-solving and court trials–which I thought blended very well.

One thing's for sure, you will be excessively reading. This game is not for you if you don't like that, although I almost fell asleep at chapter 5 or 6 from lack of balance with the actual gameplay and story scenes.

Puzzles were very easy and trials were implemented with hint coins, if you're stuck. Cross-examining multiple witnesses at the same time was added and I thought it was witty and cool.

STORY: 7/10

As an avid fan of both series, I looked forward to the story the most considering PL is known for its great plot twists and revelations at the end of the game.

I thought the ending was just okay (compared to my favorite PL title, Unwound Future). I know the PL games stick to science-y stuff and I enjoy how they write scenarios but this one was exaggerated to the point that it’s laughable, such as doing ridiculously specific things like ringing a bell to do a trick.

PRESENTATION: 10/10

It was my first time seeing the characters I love in 3D sprites blending perfectly with the hand-painted 2D backgrounds. One of my favorite Capcom artists, Kazuya Nuri, designed the characters and drew the box art which I thought was a splendid job.

The animation of the characters, like Phoenix's famous sweating face and Luke's hand-on-the-hat sprite was redone, and it's great that they didn't stray from the characters' iconic gestures.

MUSIC: 7/10

There were a few new tunes made originally for the game, but the rest of the soundtrack is a bunch of new arrangements of old PL and PW tracks. It was breathtaking hearing those melodies ingame again, considering the last time I played both series was many years ago.

The mysterious-sounding tracks get a bit repetitive but not too tedious to listen to. I love its renditions of the Professor Layton Theme and Objection tracks a lot!

POST-GAME: 8/10

After beating the game, you unlock bonus content such as the gallery of early concept designs of the characters and whatnot, as well as DLC episodes (that are completely free). These special episodes are snippets about the characters' lives after the ending and offers one puzzle each. I thought it's cute that they sometimes make allusions to the player of the game and even talk about the 3DS! XD

The whole game, including my puzzle-solving time, took me around 25 hours to complete. It's pretty short, but seeing as they added more episodes to pad it a little makes it all worthwhile.

OVERALL

    +  Cute and witty script
+  Great collaboration of both franchises
+  Story may make you cry (Ohhh, the feels!)

    –  Excessive reading, gets a little boring at times
    –  Needs balance in gameplay and story
    –  Too much Layton spotlight, making Phoenix look inferior
    –  Phoenix, Maya and Espella's voices need more oomph

I enjoyed the game a lot–it’s kinda like reading a book and watching a movie–but if I was to compare it to the first 4 PL games (the only ones I’ve played so far), this would be bottom on the list.

If you are fan of one or both series, you should definitely give this one a try! ^o^)/

Bravely Default

Bravely Default is a role-playing game by Square Enix for the Nintendo 3DS. Although the game has an original title, it is considered a spiritual successor of Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, or "spin-off" of the main Final Fantasy series, by its creators.
The story follows the journey after the fateful meeting of four protagonists–Agnes, Tiz, Edea and Ringabel–to unravel the mystery of bizarre happenings.

The Breakdown

GAMEPLAY: 10/10

Bravely Default is a traditional turn-based RPG with random encounters – except that you can adjust the encounter rate or turn it off completely! How cool is that! What's more, you can adjust the speed of the battle to help you grind faster. With that, you can jump 30 levels higher in mere minutes.

Exploring was such a breeze. I literally swept a dungeon clean of its treasure chests without disturbance from any enemies. I hate random encounters especially when I'm lost; Needless to say, you won't ever get lost in BD because there's a map with a radar of your character on the lower screen of the 3DS.

The only characters you will be playing as are the four protagonists, but don't fret! The core gameplay of BD is the job system where you can choose and switch jobs of your characters anytime. It's fun completing the skills each job offers. There are jobs that you will come across automatically along the story, but most of the better ones come from sub-scenarios, aka side-quests.

STORY: 6/10

I'll try to keep this as unspoilery as possible, but you will come across a part in the story where you're forced to repeat certain tasks for not once, not twice, but four times if you want to get the true ending. Needless to say, this is part of the story for a good reason but is very tedious and anti-climactic. I mean, the story started out so good but the second half turned out to be so frustrating.

PRESENTATION: 7/10

The chibi sprites of the characters are in glorious 3D over beautiful 2D backgrounds. If you turn on 3D, you could see how it looks even better; it reminded me of a pop-up children's book.

Sadly, dungeons are uncreative and each floor level brings you exactly the same graphics with a different maze variation and more treasure chests to collect. After a while, it kinda becomes a chore rather than an exploration. It's very simple to walk through and impossible to get lost in them.

MUSIC: 6/10

There were a few tracks where I hummed along when it played but the rest, for me, was just forgettable. The battle theme lacked passion, unlike in other RPGs, but you're never going to mind anyway 'cause grinding is as quick as 10 seconds per battle, if you play it right.

Overall, tracks were repetitive and bland.

POST-GAME: 8/10

You unlock a New Game+ after completing either endings, as well as a special AR movie – it's an interactive movie where you move your 3DS around the room. It's also somewhat like a teaser to BD's sequel, Bravely Second: End Layer.

OVERALL

    +   Fun job system
+   Ability to customize battle play style

    –   Bland story

Bravely Default may drag you a bit slow at first, but as you earn more and more jobs, it gets really fun from there. I really hope you'll give this one a try! ^o^)

I'm looking forward to Bravely Second~

Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure

Rhythm Thief is a rhythm, puzzle and adventure video game co-developed by SEGA and Xeen and published by SEGA for the Nintendo 3DS.

Raphael, together with his pet dog–erm...partner, Fondue, go on secret missions following the mysterious disappearance of his father by switching to his alter ego Phantom R, an infamous thief who steals significant artworks from museums but returns them in a few days without a scratch. During one night, the duo meets Marie, a talented violinist who lives without parents, just like Raphael. She shares a similar goal with him so she, Raphael and Fondue travel to places and tackle quests together.

The Breakdown

GAMEPLAY: 7/10

The player will navigate areas across Paris conversing with NPCs, solving puzzles and playing mandatory and optional rhythm games encountered along the story.

If the rhythm games get too hard for you, you can purchase items that do different things like boost the rank gauge faster or help prevent deplete it if you make a mistake; the latter I like to use on difficult levels. If the gauge reaches 0, you fail that round and will have to restart. If you succeed, no matter which rank you get, that rhythm game will be saved automatically in the gallery where you can replay to your heart's content and beat current high scores. You unlock one of the three bonus chapters if you get all rhythm games at A-rank!

The contents of the gallery, such as the background music tracks and whatnot, relies on you collecting them by tapping objects you see around the areas and checking if they are hidden there. While on your hunting spree, you will come across mostly coins (used to purchase movie cutscenes, items, etc.) and many other things for, what you could call, a collect-the-parts mini game. It’s a tedious task but can be rewarding. Tap away!

I personally didn't find most of the rhythm games worth replaying, if it wasn't for the music. For one, they're too repetitive. In some, the markers lack guidance, appear abruptly and relies too much on your memory skills unlike in some rhythm games where the plots are all mapped out. The visuals, however, are gorgeous and in 3D. I love Raphael's dances and Marie's violin performances the most!

STORY: 7/10

The running gag of the story is that nobody ever recognizes Raphael’s face when he slips into one of his disguises with only very subtle changes, such as wearing a waiter's uniform and glasses.

The whole story is so short that you can finish it in one sitting. No, seriously. XD I wish there were more scenes about the characters' past and lifestyle just to pad it out a little.

The ending is quite a bit of a cliffhanger rather than an open-ended one. Here's to hoping SEGA makes a sequel?? *^*)9

PRESENTATION: 6/10

The 2D sprite artwork aren’t the best, and while they did make an effort to animate them, they consist of only 2 frames per expression (mouth open and close). The backgrounds are neat and embodies a pleasant-looking Paris. During exploration, the top screen shows the map with Raphael as the marker, all in 3D.

There are also plenty of 2D cinematics that appear often at every chapter. Don't expect much though; They don't have the best effects and voice acting is distractingly bad! Fondue, the dog, sounds too human and Marie sounds like she's always uninterested. You would think everybody recorded their lines absent-mindedly at 3 in the morning! XD

MUSIC: 10/10

The music is my favorite part of the whole game! The soundtrack is composed of many different genres like pop and classical (some even a medley of both) that can get your feet tapping to the rhythm as soon as you hear it.

Moon Princess is so beautiful it makes me well up a little. :')

POST-GAME: 7/10

The game is really short! I clocked in 7.5 hours to the end and I took my time with that!

Only after the ending when I realized you can skip your tapping sprees because you can totally do those quests even after finishing the main story. Three quests lead to their respective bonus chapters, short but sweet stories about the characters, that will unlock after the ending so in my opinion, it saves time to do them later on.

OVERALL

    +   Music is excellent, yo!!

    –   Rhythm games lack variety
    –   Overall game is very short

This game was released some years ago when I didn’t have a 3DS yet. I checked my local game store and they didn’t have it anymore so eShop was my last resort. I read that SEGA released limited physical copies of it so if you plan to get this game now, don’t be surprised if you have to download or order it online!

This game is also available on iOS as an unabridged version but most people recommend getting the 3DS version for some reason.
